3 Ways to Memorize Scripture

Introduction

Do you memorize scripture? As a child, I attended a church and there was a Bible memory program, the verses I learned as a child I still remember. Beloved, what about you? As an adult, I’ve worked on memorization.

Beloved, three ways to memorize scripture

  • write out the passage on an index card or journal
  • read the scripture out loud
  • practice saying the verse over and over again.

Psalm 119:11

Scripture,

I will keep thy statutes: O forsake me not utterly.

Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.

10 With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.

11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

12 Blessed art thou, O Lord: teach me thy statutes.

13 With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth.

14 I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.

15 I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.

16 I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.

First,

We read in the second portion of Psalm 119 how important God’s word. God’s word is good for instruction, for conviction, for direction, and for memorization.

[Tweet “God’s word is good for instruction, for conviction, for direction, and for memorization.”]

We have to know what God’s word says in order to keep the statutes. God’s word convicts us as we read in verse nine.

When we seek God with our whole heart, He will not let us wander far from His word.

So,

With the memorization of God’s word, we are less likely to habitually sin.

Beloved, reading God’s word and memorizing His word is to hide his words in your heart, so that you might not sin against God.

Will you like the Psalmist meditate on these verses, will you delight and not forget His word?

Lastly,

Beloved, start with one verse to memorize, why not start with Psalm 119:11.

Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Psalm 119:11.

My last suggestion is to pray God’s word back to Him.

Father God, I have hidden Your word in my heart so that I might not sin against You. I am in awe of Your majesty. Lord, I ask for those struggling with a habitual sin that they repent and turn from the sin and seek You first. Let us treasure Your word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

What verse are you going to memorize?
