Have you ever thought about Moses’ mother? Egypt is where Joseph reunited with his father Jacob. There were millions of Isrelities in Egypt. Pharaoh gave the edict to the midwives to kill all male babies. Scripture says the midwives feared God more than Pharaoh. Moses’s mother had two children Aaron and Miriam. Moses must have been a beautiful baby and when he was three-months old Moses’ mother placed him in a basket so that the Princess would find him. Moses grew up in the Pharaoh’s house but when he was a young adult he made the choice to identify with the Israelites. He was in the desert when he saw the burning bush. He was eighty years old when he lead the people out of Egypt.
They witnessed miracles, they walk through on dry land when crossing the red sea, they ate heavenly food–manna, and they drank water from a rock. God gave Moses the ten commandments not once but twice. The words were inscribed by the finger of God.
The Ten Commandments were God’s gift. This gift was intended to point us to Jesus. Ann Voskamp says,” The ten commandments are more that God saying, Here is My law for you–they are saying, Here is my love for you. The Ten Commandments are a command to relationship. To love vertically, to love horizontally, to love relationship–and it is not a suggestion.”
“God gives God–and Jesus fulfills all the law, all our love.”
This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Deuternomy 30:19
Ann VosKamp challenges us to read the Ten Commandments, she encourages us to worship God with our dance.
Father God, you set before us life and death, blessings and curses, and ask us to choose life so that we may live and love you. Help us to listen to your voice and to hold fast to you. You are the lord of my life.
Romans 2:23 says that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Which commandments do you know you have broken? [Tweet “Jesus is the bridge between the Law and God.”].
Moses’s mother was willing to give up Moses to keep him safe. Oh how she must have prayed to keep him safe. I am glad she loved God so much she gave birth to this child who grew up and was instrumental in saving the Israelites. He met with God on the mountain and gave the people the LAW. Blessings Diana
