Joseph was a descendant of King David and so when the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. The process was to return to their ancestral towns. So Bethlehem in Judea was where Joseph and Mary had to travel from their village of Nazareth in Galilee.
Mary was betrothed to Joseph. She was expecting this miracle child at any time. The miracle of Jesus, Mary was a virgin, we know from the scripture that she never questioned God and His will for her life. In Luke 1 we read of Mary’s song.
And Mary said:
“My soul glorifies the Lord
47and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
49for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
holy is his name.
50His mercy extends to those who fear him,
from generation to generation.
51He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
52He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
53He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
54He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful.
Mary great with child, no room for her to have this baby. The Inn Keeper allows them to stay in the barn. Our Lord is born, wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manager. The night is cold and the stars are in the sky, but the Bethlehem star that is greater than any of the other constellations and can be seen announcing to the world a King was born. The wise men seek him and today wise men and women still seek him.
Saint Augustine said, “Christmas is fast approaching. And now that Christ has aroused our seasonal expectations, he’ll soon fulfill them all.
As I was writing my post disappeared, I have to tell you what I wrote was pretty profound. So as I am out of time, I will end with this as we are traveling to be with family tonight.
