“Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were
seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.” John 6:11
John 6:1 After these things, Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee, which is also called the Sea of Tiberias. Jesus popularity was great, he had healed many people the day and so a large crowd followed him. He climb the hillside and sat down overlooking the Sea of Galilee with the disciples. In 1995, I visited this place. It looks very much like the picture above. In a bible study called Experiencing God, the author states that God is at work all around us and when we are in His will, he invites us to share in the work he is doing.
On this special day, Jesus spoke to Phillip. He asked Phillip where they might buy lunch for the crowd of 5,000 men and their families. Jesus already knew what he was going to do but he wanted to increase the faith of the disciples. Phillip responded that to buy the food for that many people would be a half of a years salary for each person to have one bite of bread. Andrew told Jesus there is a boy here with five small barley loaves and two fishes. How far will that go? It was lunch for the small boy.
Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Then he prayed the above prayer, the disciples distributed the bread and the fish. When everyone was full he had the disciples to gather the left overs. The left overs were 12 baskets of barley loaves.
The story concluded in John 6: 14-15, “After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.
Jesus ended his day alone with God praying.
Jesus used miracles to teach about God and how much he cared about every person. He fed them which met a basic need. Every day we meet people who need to know that God is real. Will you today join God and let him use your talents to reach people for Jesus?
Father God, thank you for your word. Thank you for Jesus and his love for each of us. Thank you for the little boy who gave his bread and fish, he gave all he had to Jesus, let me give all that I have to Jesus.
Today I am thankful for lunch that made for me, I am thankful I can go walking, I am thankful for sunrises, I am thankful for sunsets, I am thankful for God’s word.
Your turn, I am thankful for……..
