Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and
petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. … Philippians 4:6
Matthew 6 is one of my favorite chapters in the Bible. This is where the Lord’s prayer is. Under sixty words, most of us memorized this prayer as a child.
“ ‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11Give us today our daily bread.
12And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13And lead us not into temptation,a
but deliver us from the evil one.b ’
But this is not the reason that I love this chapter in the Bible. There is some very good instructions in Matthew 6 and it starts with instruction on prayer, fasting, not to store up treasures on earth, and then the portion of scripture on how not to worry.
I saw a sign in Oklahoma, the worry is sin in disguise. Today what are you worrying about? Dear One, please know that worry will not change the outcome of your situation. I love the reassurance in these verses. In verse 25, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes. Now we find out the answer to the question in verse 26-34.
Read them with me.
26Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your lifee ?
28“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
The answer is to not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.
Father God, I ask that the person reading this will know that you care for them. Lord let us bring our cares to you because you care about every detail of our lives. The verses show that we can not add a single hour to our lives because we are worrying. Help me cast my cares upon you.
Your turn I am giving my cares to the Lord. Today I am thankful for……….
