Totally disabled from migraine headaches, I really wanted to go back to work. My ideal job was the dream of becoming a nurse. The Department of Rehabilitation, willing to retrain me, paid for me to go to college to become a medical assistant. I attended a Pain Center and learned I could function with the headaches. So I started school.
“The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too hard[d] for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.” Genesis 18: 13-14 ESV.
We read in Genesis 17 that Abram is 99, and the Lord visits him and reaffirms his covenant with Abram and changes his name to Abraham. Remember, when he was 75, he leaves his family home and receives the promise he will be the father of many. In Genesis 15-16, we see the human effort to have this child. So now, 13 years have passed, and Ishmael is not the promised child.
Three men visit Abraham and Sari. God changes her name to Sarah and tells her nothing is impossible for God. Sarah is in her 90’s, and she hears this and laughs. Beloved, I would have laughed or fainted. God tells her next year; she would have a son. Her waiting was over. For a woman in Biblical times, becoming a mother was the most important dream.
God promises Sarah she will be the mother of nations, the mother of Kings, the mother of Issac. Wow!!!! Issac means laughter.
Conclusion
So when I graduated with my medical assistant degree, I applied for the nursing program. I ran towards the goal of becoming a nurse. I’ve experienced an amazing career as a registered nurse. Not only did God help me graduate with my Associate’s Degree, but ten years later, I received my Master’s Degree in Nursing.
