Impulsive and Faithful

What words would you use to describe yourself? I was asked to describe myself this morning. This is hard for me because I was raised to not draw attention to oneself. Today we explore the words that describe Moses.

Faithful

Moses is faithful and today we will see that he is impulsive.

In our hall of faith chapter, according to Dr. David Jeremiah’s study Bible, Moses occupies more attention than another person, ten verses.

You are my refuge

Today, we will look at the first five verses in Hebrews 11 that covers Moses.

By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.

By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;

Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.

By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible. Hebrews 11: 23-27.

Moses was drawn out of the water and adopted by the daughter of the Pharaoh. As we read in the last blog he was educated by the finest in the Egyptian household. He was adopted so he had all of the benefits of inheriting a fortune. Yet, we read that Moses identified with his people. So much so, that he defends the Egyptian.

Compassionate

We pick up the story in Exodus 2,

And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: Exodus 2:11b.

At this point, the character trait is compassionate. Beloved are you compassionate? I am compassionate. Probably to a fault. In this current crisis, my heart is torn for those who are suffering from isolation, who are ill, who are struggling meeting their needs. Moses knew he was not an Egyptian. He was a Hebrew being raised in an Egyptian environment. Read those words, Moses looked on their burdens.

Beloved, their burdens were real, the Israelites were slaves and the oppression was great.

Impulsive

Unfortunately, Moses becomes indignant and impulsive, he avenges the life of the Egyptian. Read with me.

and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren.

And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand. Exodus 2: 11b-12.

The next day thinking no one had seen him Moses finds out differently someone had seen what he had done.

And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow?

And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known. Exodus 2: 12-14.

Not only does he fear but he finds out that the Pharaoh knows and he flees for his life.

Moses is on the run. Beloved, we can never hide our sins from God.

Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well.

This scene ushers us into the next season of Moses life. A time of growing and reflecting as he marries, he becomes a father, and becomes a shepherd. The next time we meet, Moses will encounter God.

Lastly,

Beloved, don’t be to harsh on Moses, he avenges a fellow Hebrew. He chooses the God of his parents. He is faithful to God.

In describing myself, I am loving, kind, and generous. What words did you choose to describe yourself.

Moses is faithful.

Father God, help me to be the kind of woman that you want me to be. Help me to be in Your word? Help me to apply your word to my life. Show me the ways I can be faithful and generous. Help me to be quick to only defend you.

What area do you need to show faithfulness?
