S-Before I was afflicted I went astray but now I obey your word. You are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees. It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees. The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.
O- The Psalmist is human and he strayed from God’s plan for his life. Yet, he returns to His true love, God. He declares that God is good, he asks to learn God’s word. He proclaims that the affliction is good because God’s word is better than silver and gold. God’s word is called law and decrees and these decrees bring us back to God’s will.
A When you are sick, do you feel picked on or that it is God’s fault? Sometimes, we do suffer the consequences of our choices but God is with us even in our illness. Are you angry with God because of your illness? Can you say that it is good to be afflicted? Or are you like this Psalmist and say God’s grace is sufficient to meet my needs and God you are good all the time even though I am ill. God your word is amazing and is better that silver and gold.
P Father God you are good, all of the time even when I am sick. When I am sick I look to the heavens where my strength comes from and I count on you to enable me to be strong when I am not feeling well. Lord I do not want to feel sorry for myself because you are with me in the midst of my pain. Thank you that your word is sharper than a two edge sword, it is the belt of truth, and it is sweeter than honey, and more precious that any amount of silver and gold. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen
