Read John 15: 14-15
Friendship is one of God’s gift and God’s friendship is better than kittens, puppies, chocolate, crackling noise of a fireplace, or a French Vanilla Latte. In God’s promises, Who We Are in Christ, on promise is we are Christ’s friend.
Friendship demonstrates love for the other person and Jesus talks about his love for us in John 10 in that he knows our name and that he lays down his life for his sheep.
A biblical friendship that stands out in my mind is David and Jonathan in the Old Testament. Let me refresh your memory. David was the King but not taken office. Jonathan is Saul’s son and Saul is King, Saul hated David and searched to harm him. Somehow, despite the fact Jonathan should have been heir to the throne, David selected by God, Jonathan was not jealous. In 1 Samuel 18:1 says, “After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself.” They were soul friends. They related to each other through love and respect. Do you have any of those kinds of friends?
What makes a good friendship? I think that our friendships really count when we invest in the friendship. We are visiting my husband’s best friend and his wife and I have never had a chance to get to know one another but we are here and the common denominator besides our husband’s love for one another is our love for the Lord. I already feel a love for her and a budding friendship. Sharing the love of the Lord is an amazing gift because he brings love and friendship into your lives that you are not expecting. I had this happen two years ago when I met an online friend. Recently I lost my first friend in life as she is now in heaven. Sometimes we have friends for seasons such as the ones in college. The secret in David and Jonathan’s friendship is their love for each other and their love for God.
Who is your best friend? What do you bring to a friendship? Have you ever been disappointed or felt like you have given too much in a friendship?
Beloved, one friendship that will never disappoint us, that is Jesus.
