There was a time in my management career as a nurse that I would say to the person training, “There is no dumb question!” In my heart of hearts I believed that but may I say I have heard some pretty dumb questions.
I can really empathize with Moses as he starts asking God if he is the right person. I think I would have been saying, “Let me see if I heard you right, You want me to go to Egypt and go to the Pharaoh and tell the king of Egypt, to let the Israelites go? Seriously!!!”
Now the scripture shares the questions Moses asks as he tries to wrap his mind around this assignment. And can I get an Amen for God tolerating the questions, however, I think towards the end, God was ready for the questions to stop. Beloved, have you ever had a child ask a question and then continue to ask, Why?
Read with me the questions,
But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” Exodus 3:11.
Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” Exodus 3:13.
“What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you’?” Exodus 4: 1.
Moses said to the Lord, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.” Exodus 4: 10.
Then Moses takes it to far.
But Moses said, “Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.” Exodus 4:13.
Yikes
Beloved, it is here in the scripture that we see God’s response, and it breaks my heart because I wonder if I’ve pushed God’s buttons. Has He asked me to speak to my coworker and I tuned out the request, what about that difficult neighbor, or better yet that difficult love one.
Read with me God’s response.
Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses and he said, “What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and he will be glad to see you. 15 You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth; I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do. 16 He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were your mouth and as if you were God to him. 17 But take this staff in your hand so you can perform the signs with it.” Exodus 4: 14-17.
Moses conversation with God fails to convince him that he was the right person for the job. God answered all his questions, provide a plan, and yet Moses still asked God to send someone else. This is that impulsive character flaw that Moses had, the same flaw when he killed the Egyptian.
God’s Hook
However, God does not let Moses off the hook, going back to Egypt to speak to Pharaoh is his job to do even if he has help.
In my blog post at Heartwings.com Verses to Confirm Your Calling.
we all are called to do something for the Lord. What is God asking you to do? Our calling starts with an acceptance of Jesus as our Savior. Beloved when did you ask Jesus to be your Savior?
In the next blog, Moses accepts his role from God.
The bottom line is we cannot afford to be stubborn. If God asks you to do something, He will enable you to do what He has asked.
Conclusion
One of our spiritual blessings is the Holy Spirit, He is wooing you and waiting to enable you to do whatever God is asking you to do.
Father God, thank You for Your Son Jesus Christ that He purchased eternal life for each one of us when He died on the cross for all of our sins. We know that we are created in Your image and You have given us salvation and the forgiveness of sins. Let us be receptive to Your plan for our lives. May we be willing to bring our questions to you but then let us be obedient and eager to serve You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Just as I answered the questions of the nurses, God will answer your questions.
