The God Of All Comfort

Beloved, what gives you comfort? Do you have a favorite food, a favorite pair of shoes, a favorite pair of jeans? I experience comfort every time I go snuggle in my bed with my pillow. I love to take a nap in the afternoon.

Comfort comes in many sizes and different shapes. As a noun comfort is defined as a state of physical ease and freedom from pain or constraint. As a verb comfort is defined as ease the grief or distress of; console.

There is a story in the Bible about a woman who is bleeding, Jesus comes to town, she has heard how he heals people, however, she is unclean and not suppose to be in town during this time of the month. For her, she has an issue of blood many more days than in normal. She decides to just get close enough to touch the hem of Jesus’ robe. She fights for her right to be healed. Jesus knows that someone touched his robe, and he calls out, it is the moment of truth for her. Perhaps she is intimidated but she speaks up. I am the one who touched you.

Beloved, there was a time in my career where I needed to be saved. In middle management, you try to please your boss but you also try to please those who work for you. I wanted out of management. Thankfully, God heard my cry. I did not jump out of the boat before it was time. I waited and God opened the door. I found comfort in my new job. I found comfort in God’s faithfulness to deliver me from an uncomfortable situation.

Just as Jesus healed the woman’s body, He healed me and gave me my final job as a nurse where I brought comfort to the people discharging home from the hospital.

Father God, hear our prayers, will you heal our land? Will you meet the tired mom who needs to still help with homework? Will you meet the woman who struggles and eats too much? Will you become real to the person who is grieving a loss? Will you comfort each one of us? In Jesus’ name, Amen.

What do you need comfort? Will you turn to Jesus?

Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.

Genesis 50:21

I love how God will comfort us–either by moving us or helping us to find joy in what he has asked us to do.
