Beloved, if I could teach a class on prayer and you were a student, the first element I would teach would be PRAISE!
King David demonstrates this in his prayers to God.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well. Psalm 139:14
When I write my prayers, I use the word PART: PRAISE, ADMIT, REQUEST, and THANKS. We will see verses of King David, an intimate look into his heart as he talks to God. If you were to read my journal, you would see the same. The Bible is God’s love letter to us.
Our word today is wonderful; it is in the Bible twenty-two times. Its definition inspires delight, pleasure, or admiration; extremely good; marvelous. In this particular psalm, we read how wonderful each person is made. Let it soak in. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. You were created in your mother’s womb with a purpose. God’s thoughts of you outnumber the sand on the seashore.
Beloved, King David teaches us in Psalm 139:
- God searches us
- God knows us
- God protects us
- We can not hide from God
- God created us
- God saw us in our mother’s womb
- God thinks of us
- We should abhor evil
So Beloved, where is the prayer in this Psalm? It goes with our theme of creating in me a pure heart.
Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
What might you need to ask God to help you? Are you struggling with anxiety? Or worry? Is there a boundary you need to put in place? Have you offended someone? Do your words edify or criticize? Do you doubt that you are fearfully and wonderfully made?
What is God asking you to do in response to praying King David’s prayer?
